    January 10, 2017

    The American Board of Pathology (ABP), Tampa, FL, is pleased to announce the election of two new Trustees for terms beginning in 2017.  They are:

    Mohiedean Ghofrani, M.D., M.B.A. 

    Dr. Ghofrani is Director of Cytopathology and Women’s Health at PeaceHealth Laboratories in Vancouver, WA.  He earned his medical degree in Tehran, followed by residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Fellowship in Cytopathology at Yale University.  Dr. Ghofrani has subspecialty training and expertise in breast and gynecologic pathology.  He holds a Master of Business Administration with focus on healthcare from George Washington University, and has a special interest in clinical informatics.  Dr. Ghofrani is active in state, national and international pathology societies, and has served as President of the Washington State Society of Pathologists, President of the Oregon Pathologists Association, Chair of the American Society of Cytopathology Budget and Finance Committee, and Vice-Chair of the College of American Pathologists Cytopathology Committee.  He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Cytopathology, and Clinical Informatics and is participating in the Maintenance of Certification program.

    Barbara Sampson, MD, PhD

    Dr. Barbara Sampson has been the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York since December 2014 and is the first woman appointed to lead the Office of Chief Medical Examiner.  She earned her Bachelor’s degree at Princeton, Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at Rockefeller University, her degree in medicine at Cornell University Medical College, and residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.  She brings years of experience to her new role; she has served as the Acting Chief Medical Examiner, First Deputy Chief Medical Examiner, Senior Medical Examiner, and Cardiovascular Pathology Consultant, among other positions since 1998.  She serves as President of the Society of Cardiovascular Pathology, and is a member of the National Association of Medical Examiners, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.  Dr. Sampson has published widely on forensic pathology and microbiology, including 29 articles and 4 book chapters, and serves as an Associate Editor of the journal Cardiovascular Pathology.  She is the recipient of the Young Investigator Award from the Society of Cardiovascular Pathology and the E.R. Squibb and Sons Senior Thesis Prize for Contribution to Scientific Research.  Dr. Sampson is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Forensic Pathology and is participating in Maintenance of Certification.

    The American Board of Pathology (ABP) was established in 1936.  The mission of the American Board of Pathology, a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties, is to promote the field of pathology and the continuing competency of practicing pathologists.

    Revised in 2015, the logo of the American Board of Pathology depicts the origin and evolution of pathology.  The traditional microscope in the foreground symbolizes cellular pathology and laboratory medicine.  In the background the double helix reflects the evolving discipline in the molecular era.

    This year, the Iranian Pathologists Association of North America will once again award its Annual Trainee Award to the best poster or platform presentation at the US and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) Annual Meeting in San Antonio. The award includes a certificate and, thanks to the generous support of our members, a $500 Amazon gift card.

    All pathology trainees (residents, clinical fellows and research fellows) who are a member of IPANA or eligible for IPANA trainee membership may apply for the IPANA Trainee Award. Award applicants should submit their 2017 USCAP abstract before the deadline of Friday, February 10, 2017. An independent scientific panel will be reviewing all eligible applications, and the winner will be recognized at IPANA's Annual Business Meeting and Reception on Sunday, March 5, 2017.

    If you are a pathology resident or fellow with a poster or platform presentation in the 2017 USCAP Annual Meeting (or know one who is) consider submitting today!

    Iranian-American and Iranian-Canadian pathologists have been meeting informally during USCAP annual meetings for the last several years, led by Professor Mehrdad Nadji of the University of Miami (third person from the right in the back row of the photo).In 2011 they decided to officially forma society named “Iranian Pathologists Association of North America (IPANA)”. Since then, IPANA has been listed in the USCAP Annual Meeting program book as an affiliate society with annual business meeting and reception held on the Sunday evening of the USCAP Meeting.     Congratulations to Dr. Rossana Kazemimood, recipient of IPANA’s 3rd Annual Trainee Award, for her 2016 USCAP abstract titled “Extended RAS Mutations and Microsatellite Instability in Patients with Colorectal Cancer."
